Futures are deep, options are short — plan around that

The MCX futures series are multi-year and suit intraday trend, breakout and session studies. The MCX options series are recent only (SEP 2025 → SEP 2026, at most 260 trading days per symbol), so they are useful for checking a strategy on the current contract structure, not for multi-year option backtests.

Each futures file is one trading day of one contract (expiry in the file name and in expiry_date), so building a continuous front-month series is a matter of choosing a roll rule (for example, roll N days before expiry) rather than trusting a pre-stitched series.

Alternatives

MCX itself distributes data through authorised datafeed vendors, which sell MCX feeds with history, usually as subscriptions aimed at charting platforms. Broker APIs can also return intraday candles for active contracts. A one-time archive makes sense when you want cleaned files for a fixed window without a running subscription.

Load and roll a front-month series (pandas)

MCX futures files from 15 Jul to 14 Aug 2026 use layout B names (timestamp, symbol, expiry, oi); rename them first, as shown on the file schema page.

import pandas as pd, glob
fut = pd.concat(pd.read_parquet(f) for f in sorted(glob.glob("CRUDEOILM_FUT_1min_*.parquet")))
fut["expiry"] = pd.to_datetime(fut["expiry_date"])   # e.g. 21-SEP-2026
fut["day"] = fut["datetime"].dt.normalize()
# front month = nearest expiry still at least 3 days away
fut = fut[(fut["expiry"] - fut["day"]).dt.days >= 3]
front = fut.sort_values(["datetime", "expiry"]).groupby("datetime").first()
print(front[["close", "volume", "open_interest"]].tail())
