FAQ

Why can I not download expired option contract data from my broker API?

Broker APIs key historical data to an instrument token, and an option contract's token is retired when it expires. Without a live token there is no handle to request candles for, so the endpoint returns nothing regardless of your subscription. Continuous historical data usually works for futures but not for expired option strikes.

Do free broker expired-instruments APIs solve this?

Partly, and for many people they are the right answer. They are free and return OHLC for expired F&O contracts — but the depth is typically months, not years. If your study fits inside that window, use them and save your money. If it needs a year or more, they cannot reach it.

Are there other free sources of expired option contract data?

Yes, and you should check them before paying anyone: broker expired-options endpoints and free expired-contract CSV dumps. The free sources generally share two limits: they are NSE-only and they are shallow. Verify their current coverage yourself — free sources change without notice.

How are expired contracts organised in the download?

By expiry date. Each contract file carries every strike and both sides for that expiry, so you can either load one expiry at a time or concatenate a date range and filter by timestamp to rebuild the live chain at any minute.

Do expired contract files include open interest?

NIFTY and BANKNIFTY: yes, per strike and per side, on every bar. SENSEX has gaps. SENSEX options 1-min: open interest is present 7 Nov 2023 – 20 Apr 2026 and 6 Jul – 14 Aug 2026; it is 0 from 21 Apr – 3 Jul 2026 and from 17 Aug 2026. SENSEX 1-second option files have OI = 0 throughout.

Which indices are covered?

The coverage table above lists every index, segment and timeframe currently held, generated from the live catalog. Anything not in that table is not for sale, whatever the rest of the site says.
